It was the movie that all of us football crazy young women loved, and nearly 25 years since its release, it looks like a sequel is finally in the pipeline.

For those who may not have caught this classic, or even worse, were not born when it hit our screens, the story, set in London, centres on the daughter, Jess Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), of a strict Indian couple who will not allow their daughter to play football. After meeting Jules, played by Keira Knightley is a part of the local semi-pro team, they embark on several secretive ways to get Jess to play for the team.

With a star-studded cast, including our own Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the movie was a hit, and it looks like director Gurinder Chadha is about to bring us a second helping.

After beating Spain in Sunday's Euro final against Spain, Gurinder hinted that while it is early days, there is something in the pipeline.

According to Vogue, the director said, 'We've been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters.'

Hoping to hit the cinemas in 2027, the next instalment will be on the cusp of the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

The message in the first movie was one of encouragement and empowering women, letting them know that nothing can hold them back from what they love and, more importantly, what they are good at.

Believing that this message can still be highlighted in today's society, Chadha said that 'The film's been part of that legacy, and I feel there's more that I can do. So that's what I'm writing, and that's what I'm focusing on. It will be hard-hitting, of course, but it will also be incredibly joyous.'

It has been nearly 25 years since the movie was released, and a lot has changed since then - David Beckham has long retired, and Keira Knightley and Jonathan Rhys Meyers have made it big in Hollywood.

So, will the posters on the wall still be of David, or will a new star take his place? It looks like we will have to keep a close eye on this.
