A former Taoiseach’s fine Victorian home has been future-proofed for modern family life

The former home of Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald, now owned by his son Mark FitzGerald, co-founder of estate agents Sherry FitzGerald, includes lifts to all three floors and a pantry

Number 30 Palmerston Road, Rathmines is considered one of Dublin 6’s best roads. It’s been home to many well-known people over the years with former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald purchasing the two-storey-over- basement Victorian redbrick in 1976.

Mark grew up in the fine family home with his parents’ entertaining guests such as John Hume and Bono and Ali Hewson, as he told The Irish Times. The former Taoiseach was part of the negotiations that led to the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement.

There is also a larder and separate panty – the latter curated in such a way that it will likely go viral on socials. Painted a deeper shade to the kitchen its contents include tureens and tableware not in everyday use but at least on view as well as everyday condiments and quick dinner fixes. On view is a jar of Coleman’s mustard and Old El Paso fajita mix. In such a venerable address it all feels very relatable.

Situated on the sunny side of the street the garden gets sun all afternoon.

The genteel upgrades mean the Ber exempt four-bedroom, five-bathroom house has a well-appointed interior and now measures 362 square metres.

There is off-street parking for up to four cars to the front with many schools, national and secondary, within a short walk of the property.
