Dáithí O'Sé is a busy man, but the RTÉ host always manages to make time for two very special people, his wife Rita Talty, and their eleven-year-old son, Micheál Óg, or Ógie, as the pair affectionately call him.

Rita, who represented New Jersey at the Rose of Tralee festival in 2008, makes a habit of taking their only child back to the US city every year. However, Dáithí is usually not able to travel with them because of work commitments.

So, the Kerryman came up with a sweet way to make sure that he is squeezing in some father-son time with the tween.

The pair recently went on a boys' trip to Portugal for the second year in a row. 'Rita and Ógie go back to New Jersey every summer, and I don’t get to go, so Ógie and I went to Portugal for a weekend, just the two of us,' he told RSVP.

Dáithí continued: 'We started it last year, and we’ll do it again this year. It’s great hanging out together, and that builds a very strong bond.'

Rita added that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with the Rose of Tralee host and their son. According to the proud mum, the pair would have no shortage of similar interests to chat about while on their trip together.

'He’s a really happy-go-lucky boy, just like his dad,' she told RSVP, explaining that Ógie is interested in GAA, music, soccer, and basketball. 'They’re very similar in personality, they’re very outgoing, but they don’t like all the attention on them,' she said.

However, the family still makes a major effort to spend time as a trio. Rita previously told EVOKE that they spend quality time by going to matches together.

'The most romantic thing (Dáithí does) is bring me to Kerry matches each weekend... but I love it. It's our family time together with Ógie,' she told us.
