Temperatures are expected to plummet to lows of -4C in parts of Ireland on Wednesday night, bringing heavy snow in some areas and the possibility of school closures.
Falls of sleet, hail and up to 5cm of snow in Munster are a likelihood for the remainder of the week. Met Éireann’s Status Yellow snow-ice warning for the entire country will remain in place until at least 10am Thursday.

However, conditions are expected to be the most severe in Munster, with snowfall, poor visibility and dangerous travelling conditions.
Siobhán Ryan of Met Éireann told Newstalk that Wednesday night and early Thursday morning ‘we would expect there will be a proper dusting of snow – so that could affect some schools, it could affect some businesses’.

The national forecaster has warned that the coming days will be ‘very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches’.
Similarly, the UK Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.
The cold snap is expected to end at the weekend.
