Many people who went through the Irish education system will know that although we were taught Irish in school, it mightn't be all that well remembered many years on.
Hilda Fay is one of those people who, although she knew a cúpla focail as Gaeilge, had to brush up on her native tongue for her role in Netflix's highly anticipated series, House of Guinness.
The former Fair City actress plays Sultan in the show, a wise character who speaks Irish, and for Hilda, she turned to her children, Pearl and Nancy, for help to hone in on her Irish skills.

At the Lighthouse Cinema's screening of House of Guinness, Hilda told EVOKE that her Irish needed a little bit of reviewing ahead of filming.
'Look, I'm not a Gaeilgeoir. I learned just like we all learned from when I was four until I was 17. We all come out of the education system not really feeling we can speak it,' she said on the red carpet.

Hilda continued: 'It's our language and my children are Gaelgeoirs. They went to a Gael scoil, so they speak as Gaeilge, and I'm very proud of that.'
On how her children helped her, the Dublin native said they were her greatest tutors in bringing the language back to life for her.
'They helped me, and I had some of the mammies from the school, and they helped me. It was only a cúpla focail but I'm very proud of them.'
'I was very proud to speak [the language] in the show. But like my kids slag me, I said "please, can you help me with my art!".'

When asked if she would keep her newfound skills up and learn more of the language, the busy actress said: 'Someday I'll do a course. I remember trying to get the kids into the school and I went back to Irish class and I did a bit'.
Like many of us, Hilda feels a strong connection to the Irish language, and felt 'very proud' to speak the language in the series, albeit only a few lines.

House of Guinness premieres on Thursday, September 25, and follows the story of the Guinness family immediately following the passing of Sir Benjamin Guinness, and how his four children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben, carry on his legacy.
