Monaghan road crash victim named as Armagh All-Ireland winner

A woman who lost her life in a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Monaghan town has been named as a former All-Ireland winning Armagh footballer.

Aoife Lennon had been driving when her car collided with a lorry on the N2 in Castleshane around 2.45pm on Wednesday, September 10.

Emergency services were called, but Ms Lennon died at the scene.

Gardaí have said that a post-mortem exam will be arranged, and 'no other injuries were reported'.

Ms Lennon was from Derrynoose, Co Armagh, and the wife of a local member of An Garda Síochána. A sporty woman, she was well-known, having won Ulster and All-Ireland titles at junior level.

Tributes have been pouring in for Ms Lennon in the wake of her death. Emma Oliver, secretary of Armagh Ladies Football Association, said: 'Everyone in Armagh LGFA is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our former player Aoife Lennon, R.I.P.'

'Aoife was part of our Junior All-Ireland winning team in 2005 and Ulster winning team in 2004.

'We would like to send our condolences to Aoife’s wife, Karen, parents Seamus and Adele, brothers Patrick and Sean, her nieces, nephews, and wider family circle. We also keep in our thoughts Aoife’s friends and former teammates in Armagh LGFA and Derrynoose GAC.'
