It's onwards and upwards for Cathy Halloran as she announces her retirement from RTÉ.
The Dublin native has worked for the national broadcaster for 38 years, with 31 of those years spent as RTÉ News' Mid West Correspondent.
Sharing the news of her retirement on X, Cathy penned: 'Today some news of my own I have decided to exit my working life in @rtenews and retire early.'
'A massive thank you to so many who have shared their stories Princes, Presidents and People - an honour and thanks so much to my talented colleagues especially the team in the regions,' Cathy continued.
Becoming the subject of RTÉ News for once, the journalist said: 'It's been a rollercoaster of a career during almost four decades working for RTÉ News, the bulk of them as Mid West Correspondent, and has given me a "Page One Lead" on the stories making history and impacting the lives of citizens and their families and communities across this very busy part of the country.'
Describing it as a 'very competitive region', she paid tribute to her journalist colleagues. She also said her fellow reporters have been 'my colleagues and friends and great supporters also of my work'.
Cathy added: 'But most of all, it's the people and communities of the Mid West who have allowed me into their homes and their hearts to let me tell their stories around the issues that were of concern and mattered to them.
'That has been a great joy and privilege, and I will miss it hugely.'
Cathy launched her career as a journalist in the 80s with The Farmers Magazine before she went on to report for the Connacht Tribune newspaper in Co Galway.
She joined RTÉ News in October 1987 where she reported for both radio and TV news on everything from the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Industry at Dublin Castle from 1990.
She was appointed RTÉ's Mid West Correspondent in 1993, and now, 31 years later, Cathy is passing the baton on.
