He opened up about his drinking to former heroin addict turned neuroscientist Dr Brian Pennie in the second episode of the RTÉ One series Hooked - to be broadcast this evening.

Matthews told Dr Pennie: 'I used to drink almost every single day, probably from the age of 15 all the way up to 30.

'There was a period where I would walk past that liquor cabinet at nine, 10am, and I would be drawn by it, and I would sometimes open the cabinet and just bang a shot of tequila or something, put the bottle back and walk past it.

'And Vogue would say, "Have you had a drink today?" and I would say, "No, of course I haven't, why are you asking me if I have had a drink today?" - almost aggressive back.'

He said that when he met Harley Street psychotherapist Chip Somers - the former addict who would sober him up - for the first time, he had not been drinking, as he knew he would be assessed. However, he had drunk heavily the night before.

Mr Somers told him: 'You stink of whiskey. When we finish this meeting and you leave, I'm going to open the windows in here so my next client doesn't think I've been drinking.'

Matthews said: 'He made me feel like sh*t and then he challenged me... All of a sudden it became about showing him, not doing it for yourself.' The Eton old boy said he does not define himself as in recovery, but added that drinking does not 'frighten' him anymore.

'I don't need to drink in secret.

I don't need to hide it. If I fancy a glass of wine with my wife, I'll have one. She won't care,' he said. Hooked airs at 9.35pm on RTÉ One tonight.
