The mercury climbed close to 19C at the start of the week, and is set to stay that high – at least – for the entire week.

Met Éireann’s forecast up until Friday is for dry and settled weather with plenty of sunshine, although there will be some cloud creeping in on Saturday, and the chance of a shower on Sunday.

The highest midday temperatures of 18C in the shade were recorded on Monday in Athenry, Co. Galway, as well as in Clare, Roscommon and Mayo.

The stunning weather is down to a rare atmospheric event which is known as the Omega block.

Brandon Creath from Met Éireann said: ‘The best of the weather will be in the west of the country, particularly in Galway and Clare.

‘Thursday is the most likely day when temperatures have the potential of reaching 20C.

‘Clear blue skies will obviously mean cooler nights as temperatures on Sunday night did get as low as -1.5C in some areas.’
