Everything to know about history-making Irish athlete Kate O'Connor

Kate O'Connor made history for Ireland as the country's first-ever athlete to compete at the Olympics in heptathlon.

She later achieved more glory as she secured Ireland's first medal at the World Indoor Championships in 19 years after competing in the pentathlon in Nanjing, China.

Her sporting background

24-year-old Kate is a track and field athlete competing in the heptathlon and indoor pentathlon for Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Impressively, she holds both the Irish and Northern Ireland record for heptathlon with 6297 points and indoor pentathlon with 4396 points.

She was awarded the silver medal in the heptathlon at the 2019 European Athletics U20 Champions and the silver medal, her first senior medal, in the heptathlon at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In 2023, she finished in 13th place at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, and later did Ireland proud at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

2024 Paris Olympics

Kate competed in two of seven of the heptathlon events at this year's Olympics Games: 100m hurdles and women's high jump.

The 24-year-old produced a season's best clearance on 1.77m in the high jump. She finished 14th overall after each of the seven events were completed.

World Indoor Championships

Kate achieved three personal bests across the five events at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, in March 2025 and secured a silver medal for Ireland.

She came into the final event of the pentathlon just three points behind the USA's Taliyah Brooks. Luckily, Kate managed to finish third in the 800m, ahead of the American.

Kate's silver medal is Ireland's first at the World Indoor Championships in 19 years.

World Athletics Championship

It was a historic silver medal in the heptathlon for Dundalk native Kate at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday, September 20.

She becomes the first Irish individual to medal in a multi-discipline sport. Wow!

Her rumoured partner

Kate is rumoured to be dating footballer Georgie Kelly. He's currently signed for the League Two club in the EFL, Carlisle United.

Though the pair have yet to confirm their relationship, they've been spotted together on numerous occasions and often share snaps of one another on social media.

The couple are said to have crossed paths during their college days at Sheffield Hallam University.

No doubt Georgie and Kate are always supporting one another's sporting ventures, as no one quite gets the commitment like someone in the industry.
