Monster of Avignon convicted of raping his wife Gisele Pelicot

Dominique Pelicot has been found guilty of all the charges filed against him, including the aggravated rape of his wife Gisele Pelicot.

Infamously dubbed the Monster of Avignon, the 72-year-old has been sentenced to 20 years in jail after pleading guilty to all the charges.

Pelicot was also found guilty of the illegal broadcast of images of his wife and of recording images of her and two other women.

Police are said to have found around 20,000 images and videos of Gisele Pelicot being abused in files on her husband's computer. There were also pictures of his daughter naked.

From 2011 to 2020, Mr Pelicot drugged and raped his wife and also invited men he had contacted on the internet to rape her while she was unconscious.

On Thursday, now 72-year-old Gisele arrived at the courthouse to see the verdicts delivered in the case, which lasted for over three months.

50 men faced a combined sentence of more than 600 years for the parts they played in the ten-year campaign.

Each of Mr Pelicot's 50 accomplices – all of whom are expected to be found guilty – face terms between four and 18 years.

During the trial, his daughter yelled at him: 'You will die alone like a dog and caught out in lies!,' referring to his failing health.

Speaking outside the court after the sentencing, Gisele said the trial was a very difficult thing to go through, and thanked those who have supported her.

She said she 'never regretted' her decision to make the trial public, adding that she was thinking about all of the victims whose stories remain unheard.

Gisele said she thought of her grandkids during the trial, continuing: 'It's also for them that I led this fight.'
