The Met Gala is a veritable who's-who of fashion royalty but we haven't been treated to actual royalty on the red carpet in a long time.
Though Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex was rumoured to make an appearance.
The Queen of Vogue herself Anna Wintour, chair of the event, made it known that she had her eyes on the prize in terms of other royal guests she hoped to invite.
She told The Today Show: 'I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together' adding, 'That would be my dream couple. They could leave their husbands at home. It's the two of them I want.'
And it wouldn't be the first time real-life royal family members graced the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In fact, Meghan's late mother-in-law, Princess Diana made an iconic appearance in 1995 in a bespoke Dior gown. The theme was Haute Couture, and Princess Diana wore a bespoke gown designed by John Galliano for his first couture collection for Dior.
She also sported a sapphire choker and matching earrings, a possible homage to her iconic engagement ring, maybe?
Hers is one of the most memorable royal appearances at the Met Gala, but there have been a number of titled faces on the red carpet since too.
Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele, has made it a habit to choose some iconic faces from fashion royalty to bring as part of his Met Gala entourage: Joining Florence Welch, Dakota Johnson, Harry Styles, and Jared Leto in the Gucci gang is Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline of Hanover.

Charlotte has made several appearances at the Met Gala, in 2016, she wore a tiered yellow, pink and silver embellished dress from the couture collection.
Charlotte also stunned on the red carpet in 2018 for the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination show, where she wore a glittery Yves Saint Laurent mini dress and platform black boots, looking every bit the fallen angel.
Also attending in 2018, was Princess Beatrice of York. Wearing a beautiful Alberta Ferretti gown, silver and gold crown-inspired headpiece, and matching gold peep-toe sandals.
Other frequent guests include Queen Rania of Jordan, and her son Crown Prince Al Hussien Bin Abdullah.

The pair attended the 2016 Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology event together. Queen Rania wore a black tulle and white feather tea-length dress from Valentino.
Queen Rania also attended in 2007 to celebrate the theme Poiret: King of Fashion. The Jordanian Queen was the picture of elegance in a subtle satin navy evening gown.

Princess of Germany, Elizabeth von Thurn und Taxis, is a regular feature at Met Gala events, and also attended the event in 2016, sporting a very on-theme metal mini dress from Mary Kantranzou.
