Prince William and Kate Middleton cut a sombre presence as they arrived to say goodbye to Prince Philip on Saturday.
The Duchess, in particular, looked downcast as they pulled up to a strong media presence at St. George's Chapel. It's long been reported that the royal enjoyed a special bond with the Duke of Edinburgh as they have the same sense of humour and devotion to the job.

It's the first time that Kate has been seen in public since news of Philip's passing came to light.
In keeping with the sad occasion, she opted for a simple but stylish outfit for the ceremony.

Her timeless black dress was demure but in true Kate, style featured a contemporary asymmetric neckline.
Offsetting the dress was a four-strand pearl necklace from the Queen's private collection which fittingly enough was also worn by Princess Diana which she paired with simple pearl earrings.

The Daily Mail reports that the pearls were a favourite of the Queen in the 1980s and 90s and she had the necklace especially commissioned from priceless pearls given to her by the Japanese Government.
Princess Diana then wore the pearls while attending a state banquet in the Netherlands in 1982.
The late princess also enjoyed a good friendship with Princess Philip whom she used to regularly write letters.

In keeping with the guidelines for the ceremony, both Kate and William wore black face coverings.
