The Palace has announced that Prince Philip has passed away at the age of 99.
The royal family issued a statement on Friday reading: 'It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.'
'His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.'
The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course.'
Prince Philip was married to the Queen for 73 years having tied the knot in 1947.
Back in February Philip had complained of feeling unwell and was admitted to hospital as a precaution but remained there 'under observation' for longer than expected.
He was initially only supposed to be there for a few days but that soon became more than a week.

Princes Charles and William had been to visit with Philip's grandson saying that he was doing 'okay' and later, Prince Edward added that his father was doing 'much better' and that the family were keeping their 'fingers crossed' he would recover and be home soon. He returned home to Windsor Castle to be reunited with the Queen in March.
The Duke retired from public duty in 2017 after a string of illnesses.

One of the more recent hospital stays occurred in December 2019 which saw Prince Philip being treated for a ‘pre-existing condition’ and was discharged on Christmas Eve.
His health had deteriorated over the last 10 years having received treatment for a number of ailments including a blocked coronary artery in 2011, a bladder infection in 2012, had exploratory surgery on his abdomen in 2013 and had to pull out of the Battle of Jutland anniversary event in 2016 due to a ‘minor ailment.’
