Kate Middleton narrowly avoids twinning with Meghan at service in recycled coat

Kate Middleton's back catalogue of coats is more impressive than the Beatles greatest hits, so it's little wonder then that the thrifty Duchess is happy to recycle her favourite numbers.

Looking ravishing in red, Kate attended this year's Commonwealth Service at Westminister Abbey on what was also to be Harry and Meghan's last official engagement as senior royals. 

Kate recycled a ruby red, 1940s custom made Catherine Walker coat dress for the service which fitted her to perfection and is estimated to have cost about €3,500.

Kate was last seen in this double-breasted outfit by the French-born designer, on Christmas Day at Sandringham in 2018 when she was photographed leaving church smiling with her sister in law Meghan.

That time she wore her hair loose and wavy with a chic hairband by Jane Taylor, however this time she wore her brunette locks swept to the side in a bun to show off the velvet collar of the coat.

Keeping to the theme of red, she paired the coat for the occasion with a red felt cocktail hat by Scottish milliner Sally Ann Provan, which featured rose details and accents of aubergine.

The outfit was completed with a pair of red Gianvito Rossi suede court shoes and a clutch.

The thing is that as Kate is a creature of habit, especially when it comes to looks that work for her and this could have led to a bit of a red-faced moment for Kate and Meghan as Kate also owns the very same coat in emerald green.

Much like the recycled red version, Kate has worn the green coat on a number of occasions including the St Patrick's Day celebrations in 2017 and last in November 2018 to a national service to mark the Centenary of the Armistice at Westminster Abbey.

But it's a safe bet that Kate was glad she opted for the recycled red version of her favourite style rather than the green when she spotted Meghan's outfit of choice for today's service.

Meghan wore a show-stopping shade of emerald to the same event today, and it would have been a rare misstep for the sisters in law who to date have never stepped on each others toes when it comes to dressing.

However, we're sure the ladies would have no doubt laughed it off, even if the waiting photographers would have enjoyed a chance to catch the Duchesses twinning in green.
