Shane MacGowan steals the show from Bob Geldof at Boomtown Rats film premiere

If you can't count on your friends to turn up to your party then who can you count on?

A host of well-known Irish faces from the creative industry came out in force to support Bob Geldof and the rest of the Boomtown Rats at the launch of their new documentary.

Guest guests on the red carpet included big names including Bono, Sinead O'Connor, Sting, Andrea Corr and Michael and Sabina Higgins to name but a few.

But of course there's always someone who will try to steal the show, and that prize goes to Shane MacGowan who wore a sleep mask with the words 'F*ck Off' emblazoned on it.

All were ager to see the world premiere of Citizens of Boomtown at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival at Cineworld, Dublin, as it explores the musical and social legacy of Ireland’s first rock superstars who changed their own lives, helped to change Ireland and with Live Aid changed the world.

In the entertaining, dramatic and absorbing film, director Billy McGrath digs deep into the band’s history, its remarkable songbook and highlights the key moments of its huge success and subsequent fall in 1985.

Why did this gang of friends from Dun Laoghaire get together? And then break up? What happened to them all afterwards? And how come the band regrouped in 2013?

The festival has been showing the best of homegrown and international movie making talent and this was without a doubt one of the highlights as the band has just released a new album.

Bob has been on the publicity trail, appearing on the Tommy Tiernan show for a frank interview in which he discussed everything from the tragic passing of his daughter Peaches to his sex life at 68. 

With other guests included Dave Stewart, Diarmaid Ferriter, Joseph O’Connor, Jools Holland, David Fricke and Roy Foster.
